Rath Yatra : The Rath procession of Lord Jagannath, better known as Rath Yatra, is celebrated every year on the second day (Dwitiya) of Shukla Paksha of Ashad month (third month of Odia calendar) in the temple city of Odisha, Puri. This nine-day festival, marked by various rituals and traditions, will be held during the rainy season in Odisha from 27 june to 7th July 2025.
The presiding deities of the Jagannath Temple, the main temple of Puri, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, are taken out in a ceremonial procession from the temple to their Raths along with the divine discus – the Sudarshana Chakra.
The huge, colourfully decorated Rath are pulled by throngs of devotees on the Bada Danda, the grand route to the Gundicha Temple (Gundicha- the queen of King Indradyumna) two miles to the north. While returning from the Gundicha temple, the three deities stop for a while near the Mausi Maa temple (Aunt’s residence) and have an offering of Poda Pitha, a special type of pancake that is believed to be the Lord’s favourite. After staying for seven days, the deities return to their abode.
According to the Skanda Purana, out of the twelve journeys of Lord Jagannath, the Rath Yatra or Sri Gundicha Yatra is considered to be the most famous. According to the ‘Bamdev Samhita’, those who can have the darshan of the four deities on the Singhasan (sacred seat) of the Gundicha temple for a week get a place forever in the heavenly abode i.e. Vaikuntha along with their ancestors. According to this scripture, those who can hear about this great festival also get the desired results. Moreover, those who study the rituals of the divine festival and make others aware about it can also get a place in their holy abode. The Rath Yatra of the ‘four deities’ on the Dwitiya Tithi of Ashadha Shukla Paksha is for the overall welfare of mankind. It is mentioned in Skanda Purana that no festival of Mahaprabhu is more important than Sri Gundicha Yatra. Because, the Supreme Lord of the universe Sri Hari comes to the Gundicha temple in a very joyful mood riding on his Rath to fulfill his vow.
Since the Rath is a symbol of ‘Sandhini Shakti’, the grace of Lord Sri Jagannath is showered on the devotees by the mere touch of the Rath . The famous shloka in this context is as follows: ‘Ratha tu Vamanam drishtva punarjanma na vidyate.
